The Pursuit of Happyness

“There was no Plan B. I knew I had to succeed. And because I had to, I knew I would.”

                                                                                        Chris Gardner
                                                                     The Pursuit of Happyness

This is one great inspirational story that every down and out and struggling person should watch or read.

I’ve never felt more moved watching a film about facing adversity than this one. Maybe I can identify with Chris Gardner. Our lives aren’t a bed of roses right now.

2 quotes from the movie that stuck in my head. Maybe not verbatim, but well, you’ll get the point:

“Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do what you want to do. If you have a dream, protect it.”

“Because when I was young and I get an A in a history test or whatever, I get this good feeling about all the things that I can be. And then I never became any of them.”

If we never give up and keep trying and trying, hopefully we’ll get to see the light like he did.

Making Successful & Commecial Movies

Event: Insight to Asian Cinema: How To Make A Successful Commercial Movie, Walking Down The Memory Lane With Director Jack Neo
Date: March 4, 2007
Time: 3 pm
Venue: The National Library

It’s such a pity that so few people attended the event. I was expecting a full house, since it’s Jack Neo speaking. Afterall, for someone who constantly bring in the crowd (especially the Ah Gongs & Ah Mas) and is the only local filmmaker who could rake in the $$$$$$$ for his movies, it’s such a great opportunity to hear him speak!

Jack Neo made alot of salient points about making films in Singapore. One point that I thought is truly important – the direction our film industry is heading. He brought up the example of the Taiwanese film industry. Where it used to be thriving, it is now barely surviving. Jack Neo attributes that to the decline of commercial Taiwanese films and the rise of arthouse movies. Once audience can’t relate or hardly ”understands” a movie they are watching, they walk away. So the Taiwanse film industry basically killed itself when it went down that arthouse route.
